Ben Lane and Sean Vendy played out two extraordinary matches to reach the last 16 of the Li-Ning Hong Kong Open. Lane and Vendy opened in style with a 21-13 21-13 win over top seeds and Paris Olympic bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, wrapping up victory in under half an hour. That set up a second-round contest with Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-Wei that proved to be an intense slog between the two pairs. The Chinese Taipei duo took the first game 21-18 before Lane and Vendy hit back with the second 22-20 to set up a decider. There was very little between the two opponents, with Chen and Lin eventually taking it 30-29 with the clock showing one hour and 10 minutes. In the mixed doubles, Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen lost 21-13 21-6 to eighth seeds Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund in the first round. |
